Growing GALILEO 2010

New Opportunities, New Applications, New BenefitsThe 3rd call for proposals for GNSS research and development under the EU’s 7th Framework Programme (FP7) was published on 20 July 2010. € 30.5 million in funding is available now and another € 65 million will be available later via several calls for tender.
The Growing Galileo 2010 Information Day gave a first hand opportunity to discover the funding possibilities available under the FP7 and the specific focus of the 3rd call for proposals.
Growing Galileo 2010 provided a platform to:
- Learn from and build on what has been done in the development of new GNSS technologies and applications.
- Explore the current and projected needs in order to lay the foundations for the types of applications and technologies that EGNOS and Galileo will both require and make possible in the near future.
- Bring potential partners together that can complement each other’s ideas and expertise in order to form a successful project consortia.

Funding your satellite navigation applications and technologies
The 7th Framework Programme (FP7) for research and development is the European Union’s main
instrument
for funding research in Europe in the period 2007-2013. FP7 provides support to R&D and
innovation on GNSS to accelerate the European market for satellite navigation applications, creating
opportunities for European industry. The Galileo FP7 strategic objectives are to create economic value,
achieve public benefits, and increase the competitiveness of European industry through the acceleration
of downstream satellite navigation markets.
On the 20th of July 2010 the EU launched a series of calls for proposals for a total of € 30.5 million
covering
eight topics in the area of satellite navigation. Acting under powers delegated by the European
Commission, the GSA will be responsible for managing most of the available budget.
As with the previous two calls, the emphasis will be on mature and commercially viable research with
an immediate impact on the market. The EU is open to innovative ideas from the market and especially
welcomes proposals from small companies and newcomers to the Framework Programmes.
Key characteristics of the call for proposals
- 8 GNSS topics are open
- € 30. 5 million of funding is available
- 2-stage evaluation for the "SME Topic", single stage for all other topics
- Funding level for RTD activities: 60 % for SMEs and R&D institutes, 40 % for large companies
- Classified proposals accepted
Deadlines
- SME stage-1: 5 October 2010
- SME stage-2: 13 January 2011
- All other topics: 16 December 2010
Timing
- Evaluation feedback: end of February 2011
- Project start: end of April 2011
