The European Commission is now moving rapidly towards the initial Galileo operational phase, with the launch of the first two Galileo satellites scheduled for October of this year.

Initial services will include the Open Service (OS), free of charge and providing position and timing performance competitive with other GNSS systems, the Search and Rescue service (SAR), providing precise information about the location of accidents and other emergencies, and the Public Regulated Service (PRS).

Designed for government-authorised applications, the PRS is encrypted and more robust, with anti-jamming, authentication and integrity capabilities.

PRS and PMR

Professional Mobile Radio systems (PMR) are, like the PRS, designed for sensitive applications. Typical examples are the radio systems used by police forces and fire brigades. Key features of professional mobile radio systems can include closed user groups and point-to-multi-point communications.

The GSA and the European Commission see potential synergies between PRS and PMR systems and are supporting their integration with the publication of a new Restricted Call for Tender 'PRS4PMR' (Integrated PMR (Professional Mobile Radio) and Galileo PRS receiver architecture).

The selected contractor is to deliver a platform to demonstrate the feasibility and the benefits of integrating PRS and PMR systems. The indicative budget is €900 000. The deadline for submission of requests to participate is 23 September 2011, with initial results expected within 15 months.
